Nanny of the Maroons was the foremost fighter of the Windward Maroons in Jamaica. The Windward Maroons had escaped from Spanish capture in 1655 after the British had sought to take over land in the Caribbean for the means of profiting off the enslaved people that had been transported to the island by the Spanish centuries earlier. This resulted in many of the Maroons settling in land where thick jungles and forests dominated the island, making it hard to navigate and reach the Maroons. The Maroons had temporary peace with the British before engaging in battles that would culminate into what historians refer to as the First and Second Maroon Wars. However, one thing is clear: Nanny led the Windward Maroons in numerous battles against the British, effectively utilizing guerilla warfare to fight off British soldiers and maintain the autonomy and communities the Windward Maroons had created.
